Background of the Study
Nutritional support is an essential component of the care provided to critically ill patients. Malnutrition is common among critically ill individuals and can worsen their condition, delay recovery, and increase the risk of complications (Adefolalu et al., 2023). Nurses, as key members of the healthcare team, are responsible for assessing the nutritional needs of critically ill patients and implementing appropriate interventions to ensure optimal nutrition. This may include enteral or parenteral feeding, dietary modifications, and monitoring patients' responses to nutritional support (Oluwatoyin et al., 2024).
At Delta State University Teaching Hospital, critically ill patients often require specialized nutritional care to address issues such as impaired digestion, nutrient absorption, or increased metabolic demands. Nurses are expected to be knowledgeable about the signs of malnutrition, appropriate nutritional interventions, and the timing of such interventions. However, there is limited research on the level of nurses' awareness and their ability to implement nutritional support protocols in critically ill patients. This study aims to investigate nurses' awareness and implementation of nutritional support for critically ill patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Critically ill patients are at a high risk of malnutrition, which can significantly affect their prognosis. Nurses have a critical role in ensuring that these patients receive the necessary nutritional support, but there may be gaps in their awareness of current guidelines or in their implementation of nutritional interventions. At Delta State University Teaching Hospital, nurses' understanding of nutritional support protocols and their ability to put them into practice may be inadequate, potentially leading to suboptimal care and worsened outcomes for critically ill patients. This study will assess the extent to which nurses are aware of and implement nutritional support for critically ill patients.
Objectives of the Study
To assess nurses' awareness of the importance of nutritional support for critically ill patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
To evaluate how nurses implement nutritional support protocols for critically ill patients.
To identify challenges that nurses face in implementing nutritional support for critically ill patients.
Research Questions
What is the level of nurses' awareness regarding the importance of nutritional support for critically ill patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital?
How do nurses at Delta State University Teaching Hospital implement nutritional support for critically ill patients?
What challenges do nurses face in providing nutritional support to critically ill patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with higher awareness of nutritional support guidelines are more likely to implement them effectively in critically ill patients.
There is a significant relationship between the availability of resources and the implementation of nutritional support by nurses.
Nurses at Delta State University Teaching Hospital face significant challenges in providing nutritional support to critically ill patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working in the critical care units at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, where patients are most at risk of malnutrition. It will assess their knowledge and practices regarding nutritional support and identify challenges faced. A limitation of the study is that it may not explore patient-related factors, such as the patients' acceptance of nutritional interventions or their underlying medical conditions.
Definitions of Terms
